Small Business Grants Can Help

Grants, loans and business credit infusions are the lifeblood that drives small businesses and start ups and help them participate in the economic growth of the nation. So much so that governments have started aiding small businesses in obtaining grants and have sponsored a number of institutions and lenders with the sole purpose of giving business grants.

Grant programs and the like are often administered by state governments and programs. While they may seem to be all encompassing in nature, small business grants are very strictly controlled  and given to businesses of a certain scale operating under some stringent conditions (such as for medicine, research and education). The procedure of applying for a business grant is time-consuming and ridiculously complicated. There is a dire lack of central coordinating agencies that centralize the process of approvals, grants and credit checking.

Eligibility criteria can be based on some hard to satisfy requirements such as age, race, location, sales revenue and the use of the funding allotted.  Some points to consider before one decides to go through the process of applying for a small business grant. It is always wise to question whether one has the time and money to research and apply for a small business grant oneself. If not, it is advisable to trawl local directories and online search engines (Google comes to mind) for a paid consultant to smooth things along. If the business requires funds to be injected immediately, go ahead as quickly as possible otherwise it would be wise wait for a year to gauge interest rate movements.

One of the best starting points that entrepreneurs and promoters of SMB’s can look at is the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA). This essentially provides a comprehensive listing of all government institutions and their respective criteria that are to be fulfilled before they consider your application. Very useful indeed.

Some useful tips that would help new applicants from someone who has researched the field thoroughly. It is of paramount importance that the information provided in the duly filled up form be complete and accurate in all respects. When dealing with the government it is best to cross your t’s and dot your i’s before submitting the application. Also familiarizing yourself with your grant officer, the particular agency you have applied to and their budgetary constraints will help you tailor your application targeting those important keywords that make all the difference between an approved grant and a rejected one.

Being well-versed with what the business aims to achieve with the small business grant in particular and general long term prospects for the company are a must for the primary applicant. Keep your business financials (statements, earnings reports, revenue projections) read at hand and be ready to demonstrate a deep understanding of your business. Prove that the grant will ultimately help the government agency in the long run. Also make sure to maintain regular contact with your assigned grant officer in a non-intrusive line of communication.
