We have come far from the time when education of women was considered secondary and a trivial issue that did not in any way contribute to the wealth and prosperity of the nation. This inequality was the leading cause of low education levels of women for a long time and gave rise to inequity in the education sector. And although things have started to look up for women everywhere, we are still not in a position to state, unequivocally, that women nowadays have access to the same opportunities whether it be business, careers, education or others like sports. Enter the need for education grants for women.
Business grants targeted at women have become an important factor in providing financial independence and opportunities of industry and entrepreneurship to all. Even more so when one considers that grants do not have to be paid back (like loans) and are essentially risk-free money. Getting accepted in a program or by an institution or government body that disburses grants is an entirely different issue though.
Grants are tough to come by with many financial institutions and government agencies following very specific criteria on the basis of which these grants can be given. Browsing websites, asking for information from your local government bodies and enquiring at universities and colleges will help one get acquainted with these rules and find out where one is eligible to apply. Exercise caution when applying though; there are many fraudulent companies and scams that promise to offer guaranteed education grants for women, but come with very high application fees. One should first consult www.grants.gov before moving on to something else as they are an authoritative source of accurate and up to date information.
There has been an increase in government spending in this sector with a mandate to give access to a wide swath of different sections of American citizens. By extending grants to women and making availing education loans easier governments try to see that there is equitable distribution of opportunity and wealth in the country and that enable women to raise issues of domestic violence and abuse. Recently (2009) the Stimulus Bill added $15 billion for Student Financial Assistance. Pell Grant and others have raised the maximum allowable aid to a student.
The Federal Pell Grant makes a substantial contribution when it comes to the grants market and is based on current income and financial distress of the applicant. Though not specifically aimed at women, this is a good place to start applying. Applying to most government-aided grants is free and thus a valid option for low income people. American Association of University Women, Career Advancement Scholarship Program, National Black Nurses Foundation and the Jeanette Rankin Foundation all exist primarily to extend grants to women who are in financial distress and unable to pay for a college education. Others, like National SMART Grant and Academic Competitive Grant, approve education grants to women on the basis of merit.
